Whale Diary

10:00 - Today the seas were flat and calm like a mirror! Perfect whale and dolphin spotting conditions. Just as we passed the islands where the puffins breed we found our first sighting - a pod of 12-15 white-beaked dolphins! They were really calmy surfacing and didn't seem to mind us watching them. A few of them came right under the boat so we could see their white bodies through the water. After another boat joined us, we decided to move on and look for larger animals. We saw a harbour porpoise just once on our way to the area where we usually see the whales. When we got there we found 2 humpback whales and a Minke Whale all in the same area! The minke was only seen a couple of times but the humpbacks were both regularly doing fluke dives, showing off their lovely tails! One of the whales surfaced right next to one of our boats one time giving us all a big surprise! An amazing tour!

12:00 - The sea conditions were still perfect as we headed out on our midday tour. After stopping at Akurey to see the puffins, we soon found our first whale of the tour - a Minke Whale. This individual was quite shy however because we didn't see it again. We carried on further into the bay and were lucky enough to see 3 humpback whales! At first it was just 2 in a small area but then we saw a third in the distance. Over the tour, we managed to see all three of the individuals and they all showed off their big tail flukes for us many times. A few times they surfaced right next to us and we could see their bright white pectoral fins through the water. We had the whole bay to ourselves and the whales to ourselves too so it was the perfect tour!

14:00 - The conditions today were perfect. Calm sea, no rain and mild temperatures. So we went out and we didn't have to got far and we found 3 Humpbacks. So we decided to stick with one of them, after a while we joined the second one and after that the third one. All of them were perfectly friendly and were showing off. Always fluking at the end. At one point of course we had to leave and we went back to the harbor. On the way back we encountered 1 Minke Whale, so we stayed with him for a little bit.

16:00 - The conditions were not so nice because it was raining, but besides that the sea was calm. We headed out where we have seen the Humpbacks on the last tour. We were lucky, because 1 Humpback Whale was still there! So we stayed with him and he gave us a show of the day. He surfaced very often and sneaked up on us from behind. Fluking all the time. It was awesome! During the end of the tour 6-9 White Beaked Dolphins joined the Humpback and us. So after a little while longer we left these two species to themselves and headed back.

20:00 - Rain and a bit of fog covered the bay tonight, but despite the weather we had the most amazing tour we could have asked for. It all started with something that we spotted from a distance - as it later turned out, a Humpback Whale. This individual was actively lunge-feeding at the surface, lifting its upper body above the water with his mouth wide agape. The lunges continued non-stop, and the whale was sometimes coming quite close to our boat! A little while later, we spotted two other humpback whales. These were feeding together, sometimes even lungefeeding simultaneously. The bubbles they made before coming up usually gave them away, so we were all looking out where they would surface next, although sometimes they surprised us and came up right next to our boat, creating some very exciting moments! After these amazing sightings, we headed back to Reykjavík with a stop at the puffin colony to admire the Atlantic puffins up close to finish this unforgettable tour off. Thank you nature.
