Whale Diary

10:00 - We had a great trip this morning. The sea conditions were a bit rough as we sailed out but we soon found our first Humpback whale. Near the coast at Kjalarnes we found shelter from the biggest waves and there were several Humpback whales feeding very close to the shore at a depth of only 20 meters. We stayed with them for a long time as they surfaced to breathe, fluked and went down for feeding dives. We all got amazing views of these magnificent animals and we think there were between 6-8 of them around! On the way back to harbour we visited the puffins at Lundey many of them still carrying fish in their bills to feed their young.

12:00 - The conditions were quite rough, but it was sunny. We were lucky, because we had 3 Humpback Whales right outside the harbour. They were close to our Puffin Islands. So we joined every one of them for a few minutes and enjoyed their presence. They were feeding and surfacing. It was very nice.

14:00 - We first decided to look around Lundey where we had seen a Humpback whale as a surprise on our birdwatching tour a little earlier. It was still there and we saw it lunge up through a flock of feeding gulls and puffins, amazing! We also caught a brief glimpse of a Minke whale near the island. We then decided to look further out along the coast of Kjalarnes and there were several more Humpback whales including a familiar friend that we call "Davy Jones". They were all actively feeding and we saw them surface and fluke many times also very close to the boat. In all we think there were at least 5 Humpback whales in the area. On the way back we made a little stop at Engey where there were hundreds of puffins on the water and resting in the grassy bits of the island. We then returned to harbour delighted with a wonderful wildlife encounter.

16:00 - The conditions were a little rougher and no sun was shining, but it wasn't raining. The good thing was that the 3 Humpback Whales were still in the bay, so we hadn't to go far out of the harbour. We watched them surfacing and one of them was showing us it's pectoral fin. One of them also came very close to the boat and then disappeared for a while. All of them were also showing us their beautiful flukes. The conditions improved as well during the tour.
