Whale Diary

09:00 - This morning we left the harbour and ventured into glass calm seas and sunshine! Before we even passed Grótta lighthouse, we were greeted by 5 harbour porpoises! As we ventured further into the bay, we could see a blow in the distance. A humpback whale! As soon as we arrived to the whale, it breached! But there were more blows in the distance so we decided to take a look. We encountered another humpback whale and this one also breached, over and over again, incredibly close to us! Our luck did not end there, as we moved to an area with a lot of birds and were met with at least three lunge feeding humpback whales and two minke whales! When we began making our way back to land, we crossed paths with two more humpback whales who both began breaching in near synchronicity, and one of them even head slapped multiple times! What a grand finale, we thought, but it did not end there! Just as we were inching closer to Reykjavík, we started seeing many tiny spots on the water, which weren't tiny spots at all but a massive superpod of 150-200+ white-beaked dolphins! It's safe to say we arrived back on land smiling ear to ear after this amazing tour. What an unbelievable start to our morning!

12:00 - Once again we set sail into Faxaflói bay, the sun was still shining and the sea was calmer than before. At first, we were once again greeted by a small pod of harbour porpoises, a lovely way to start any tour! When the porpoises disappeared, we sailed further out and encountered a minke whale! This minke whale was quite shy, so we moved on to the primary feeding area we had been in the morning. As we arrived, we found ourselves right in the middle of a feeding frenzy! At least 6-7 humpback whales lunge fed all around us directly in our vicinity, and multiple minke whales were even joining in. We were completely surrounded by whales, and even birds! Our friends, the puffins, graced us with their presence too throughout the whole tour! After a while spent with the whales, we sadly had to make our way back to the harbour, but we could see many blows from distant whales as we sailed past. It was yet another fantastic tour on this beautiful day!

15:00 - Our final tour of the day started off strong with a sighting of a minke whale! Then, we headed out further into the bay to our feeding spot and suddenly we were completely surrounded by humpback whales! There must have been at least 7, and after a while we simply lost count. We watched them surface and lunge feed before a pod of 5-6 white-beaked dolphins joined the party and accompanied us further out, riding our bow and we could even see them underwater, the sea was so calm! The dolphins then stopped where the humpbacks were and began feeding with them. As we were about to head back to land, we stopped one more time to watch a humpback whale that had suddenly started breaching over and over again! All while this was happening, multiple more minke whales were present around us. We returned to the harbour absolutely overjoyed from this amazing tour.
