14:00 - With a mix of some overcast skies and drizzle, we bundled up and headed out. We noticed an abundance of fish still around the port, so decided to start by looking around some of our islands nearby. That was when we spotted the back of one minke whale. This individual was rather active and kept popping up all around us. It was amazing conditions as the water was very calm, allowing us to easily track where this individual surfaced. After a great show, we left this minke to it and continued on. That was when we spotted the blow of one humpback whale! They then gave us a beautiful fluke dive. It is always wonderful when we can see that classic humpback whale tail image, as they sometimes decide not to raise their fluke fully out of the water. The chilly air also allowed us to admire the impressive blow as this individual took a breath while surfacing. After multiple surface sequences, we decided to head further out and see if anyone else was out in the bay. We then spotted the blow of another humpback whale and went to investigate it. Unfortunately this individual was rather sneaky, and with the foggy conditions slipped from our sights. We did however, see an impressive rainbow which was great to admire while locating our humpback. With the dense fog, we decided to try our luck back closer to port. While we did see some seabirds, it appeared that our cetaceans had swam to other locations. As we drove back into port a second minke whale surprised us by appearing right in front of the boat! We had quite a lucky day regarding our minkes and it was great to see them so close! We were grateful to have had an excellent encounter with our minke whales and our humpback whale and it was time to head back to port to locate a nice hot chocolate.
