Whale Diary

10:00 - We sailed out into a dense fog but incredibly calm seas this morning. Among the fog, we managed to find a humpback whale. This individual went for multiple short dives, showing off its beautiful fluke. We had an amazing time with this whale in the serenity and quietness of the foggy ocean until we finally decided to move onwards, deeper into the bay. Eventually, we escaped to fog and clear skies appeared above us. In this area, we managed to spot a pod of 3 harbour porpoises and 4 minke whales were all around us as well. Finally, it was time for us to wrap up our amazing morning out at sea and head back into the fog towards Reykjavik.

13:00 - The air was still heavy with fog as we set sail this afternoon. Once again, we did however manage to escape the fog and some distance out into the bay, we found our first minke whale, this first one eventually turned into many and we saw 6-8 minkes all around us! After some travelling around between these cetaceans, rumors of a nearby humpback whale caught our attention. This individual seemed to be resting as it was surfacing every so often, not travelling very quickly. We stuck around this whale until time ran out and had to head back into port again, pleased with today´s sightings.

15:00 - What and adventure we had this afternoon. Reykjavik was sunny and the bay was earie and foggy. We sailed out into it eager to see what was awaiting us. After a bit of sailing we got to a bird-rich area and an area we had a lot of success in the morning. We turned the engines off and waited just listening to the ocean. And then - a blow near by! Twas a humpback whale, this one seemed to be resting or relaxing. We watched it for a few moments and each time it went down it showed us its fluke. In the mean time a minke whale also appeared on the horizon and a big cargo ship came out of the fog, making it feel like we were in a movie. We decided to leave this humpback and search for more animals. As we journeyed on, 2 harbour porpoises also made an appearance! We quickly saw some splashes and were joined by a small pod of 2-4 white beaked dolphins. One of the pod came very close and was swimming around our boat. When this small pod moved on, as did we and then were quickly joined by 2 more minke whales! While we were trying to get a closer look at them, we saw another big blow and splashes! This time we had found 2 further humpback whales and (!) another pod of dolphins. It was an epic conclusion of our tour - we now had the setting sun, two calm humpback whales surrounded by playful dolphins!
