Whale Diary

10:00 - Another BEAUTIFUL summer day today! Bright sun, blue skies and perfectly calm seas - a recipe for whale watching success! After making a quick stop at Akurey to see the puffins, we headed out into the blue in search of cetaceans. It didn't take us long before we spotted a lone harbour porpoise. This individual was characteristically shy and we were only able to see it once. However, our other RIB had found a pod of 3-4 white-beaked dolphins, so we headed there and spent some time with the dolphins. They were a little bit elusive, but we managed to see them a few times. We then continued on and found another couple of porpoises, another pod of around 5 white-beaked dolphins and even 3 minke whales! We were able to see one of the minke whales nice and close. The others we saw from a distance, but with the amazing sea conditions we have today, we could still see them clearly. Lastly, we then found a humpback whale! The whale was very calm at the surface and was taking dives of 4-7 minutes so we were able to keep track of it fairly easily. We were treated to many fluke dives and even one close to the boat! An incredible encounter to finish our tour! Over the tour we managed to see all 4 species that we regularly see in Faxaflói - cetacean BINGO!

14:00 - The weather was perfect, it was warm, the sun was shining, the sea was like a mirror. Soon we found 4 Harbor Porpoises, which showed themselves quite often but then disappeared. So we went on and found a pod of 7 white-beaked dolphins with a juvenile, which was jumping around our boat. We enjoyed them for a while until we heard that another boat found 2 Humpback Whales. We made our way there and the sea got a little rougher, which made it a fun ride in the wavelets. As we arrived we could enjoy the 2 Humpbacks for quite some time. Seeing there beautiful flukes was the cherry on top of this great tour ! But as always, time flies when things are good, so we had to leave but with happy guests and happy crew. :)
