Whale Diary

10:00 - For our first tour of the day we were very hopeful as the weather was very good, not very clear and sunny but with no wind, making for very good conditions for sailing and spotting. We stopped first at Akurey for a visit to the puffins and then we set out, deep into the bay. We sailed far, reaching as far south as Keflavik, and then we did wide circles as we drove back towards Reykjavik. We covered a very big area, but unfortunately we had no luck, and eventually had to return to port. Everyone understood that nature watching can sometimes be tricky, and we gave out complimentary tickets to come again for free on our Classic tour.

11:00 - This morning we sailed out into very calm seas, with almost mirror like surface. The sky was overcasted with occasional drizzle of rain but nothing that could stop us. We headed toward the area where we saw a lot of whale activity the day before. As we approached we noticed large amounts of birds, mostly northern gannets actively plunge diving which indicates area with a lot of fish. Soon after we spotted our first whale - Minke Whale. We waited for the animal to come up again so we can have another look. We soon noticed that the area indeed was full of food as we noticed many more minke whales around. We tried to approach and see as many as possible and we managed to get close to 4 of them. On the way back we stopped at the puffin island where we saw countless puffins, many of them already on land preparing for nesting.

14:00 - We set sail right after a heavy rain, perfect timing so we could stay dry and even enjoy the sun that started to come through the clouds. First, we headed north to the area that we have not checked yet hoping for some good sightings. Indeed, we found a Minke Whale. The animal was swimming quite fast but we still managed to see it a few times. We kept saling towards the area where we been lucky this morning and although the animals moved to different location we were still able to find them because of the large flock of birds. We saw a few more minke whales but all of them were quite shy and would disappear very quickly. On the way back we stopped at the puffin island and were able to see many in all directions. Although we found a few minke whales they were difficult to follow and get a good look so all passengers received a complementary ticket so they can try their luck again on our classic tours.
