Whale Diary

10:00 - Sunshine, low winds, lots of whales - what more could we ask for? We saw about seven humpback whales in the bay today, as well as two or three minke whales and some of the RIBs saw some white-beaked dolphins on their way back. The humpback whales were in all kinds of moods today, some were resting, others feeding, and another one was more social and waved its pectoral fins in the air. With such calm seas, we could perfectly see the silhouettes of the whales through the water, particularly when some of them came really close to our boat. Enjoying the sunshine on our way back, we returned to Reykjavík harbour with lots of new memories in mind and our camerarolls full of amazing whale content.

12:00 - The weather was still as great as the morning and so we sailed out soaking in the sun. First, we encountered a pod of harbour porpoises, which only the lucky few managed to see once or twice. We then encountered our first minke whale, surfacing and diving a few times besides us. Our luck didn't end there though because we then found our first humpback whale! This individual was an incredibly active one, peduncle throwing over and over again, clearly enjoying the attention it was getting. Close by we also found a small pod of 3 white-beaked dolphins, swimming leisurely. We then went on a bit further until we reached an area with 4 humpbacks all feeding in close vicinity. One of them even surprised us with a breach! We stuck around with these individuals, getting closer looks at all of them until eventually time ran out and we had to take our leave towards Reykjavik, ending a perfect tour with all four of our main species sighted!

14:00 - This afternoon we left sunny Reykjavik and into the bay! Turns out the bay was much moodier than town and there was a dark cloud looming on the horizon. We of course didn't let this deter us and were eager for adventure. We spotted some white beaked dolphins interacting with 2 humpback whales. This was quite a special encounter as its not every day we see 2 humpbacks together as well as interacting with other species! We watched for a bit but as there were a few boats and more coming! So we ventured on and found 2 more humpback whales! One of which did a peduncle throw and then a breach! We did realise there were actually a few in the distance breaching but sadly all too far to see. We also spotted a minke whale in the same spot as well! We were very lucky during this tour, and the weather added an adventurous twist as it was quite different to life on land! During the tour we also stopped at the puffin island, enjoying these cuties in all their glory.

20:00 - The waves had picked up a bit so we had a choppy way out but luckily the midnight sun was peaking through the clouds, creating a beautifully lit scenery. After some search we found our first humpack whale, an individual feeding intensively as it went back and forth for a bit, followed by a flock of birds eager for leftovers to pick out the water. Eventually, the whale decided on a direction, which we followed, and lead us to an area with 3 more humpbacks! All of them were feeding, each followed by there respective birdflock. They were all around us and so we could witness the spectacle in awe! We then sailed in onwards to find our last individual of the evening, and what a whale it was! It was tailslapping, doing peduncle throws and even slapping its pectoral fins in what seemed to be a never ending display of its majestic power! This was the perfect ender of a perfect evening and so we sailed back feeling grateful for such an eventful night!
