Whale Diary

10:00 - The sea conditions were great as we sailed out this morning. We encountered a rather spread out pod of about 6 White-beaked dolphins and some of them approached the boat and surfaced very close. After some searching further out in the bay we saw a Minke Whale that went down near the boat. It resurfaced but turned out to be elusive so we continued searching. We soon found 2 other Minke whales that were feeding close to the surface and gave us excellent views! Before returning to harbour we had a lovely stop with the thousands of puffins at Akurey.

12:00 - After the morning tour, we set off with hopes that we would find again many cetaceans. We sailed for around 30 minutes into the bay, and we found in succession 3 pods of white beaked dolphins, totalling around 25 individuals. Some came close to the boat, and the passengers could take good, close up photos. As we continued the search, we found 2 minke whales; one of them gave quite the show, lunge feeding repeatedly, and the people were amazed to see a Minke Whale being so active. On the way back we stopped at Akurey to see the ever-delightful puffins.

14:00 - In the afternoon, the seas were still calm and we had great conditions for spotting whales and dolphins. After heading out into the harbour, we soon had our first sighting - a Humpback Whale! At first this humpback was calmly surfacing multiple times and even showing us the fluke. However, after some other boats arrived, the whale got grumpy with the amount of attention and started tail slapping and trumpeting. To not distress the whale further, we moved on and soon found a pod of 5-7 white-beaked dolphins. Within the pod was a younger, smaller one that was very interested in the boat. It seemed like the others in the pod were trying to be protective but the calf just wanted to play! After a while we moved on to another third area and found a second Humpback Whale. This onw was very slow at the surface when it was breathing but when it went down for deeper dives, it was travelling far. We still saw it multiple times and was the perfect way to end the tour!

16:00 - We headed back out to the area where we saw the second whale in the previous tour and found the Humpback Whale just a little further north. It was doing multiple fluke dives and was taking short dives. A few other boats came though so we decided to move on and search other areas. We found a large flock of birds and slowed down to investigate, hoping that there would be whales underneath. However, we were unlucky and didn't find anything. We decided to head back to the Humpback Whale we had already seen as the other boats had left and we had it all to ourselves! It surfaced many times very very close to us! An amazing way to finish the tour before heading back to Akurey to see the puffins.

20:00 - Our midnight tour started with calm seas and smiley faces! We started the tour visiting Akurey to spot some puffins! Then we sailed out once more to the area where we spotted the whales during the previous tours. After half an hour of sailing we heard the news! Our colleagues found a Humpback Whale! We headed there just in time to se it's peduncle throw! The whale was quite calm and we were able to see it very well before we decided to continue to a different area. However as soon as we left the whale we spotted a small pod of about 5-6 white beaked dolphins! After these great sightings we decided to start our journey back to the harbour.
