Whale Diary

09:00 - This morning we had mostly cloudy skies, but barely any wind and calm seas. We sailed out to the spot where we saw wildlife yesterday and quickly we found around 10 humpback whales in the area, all vey clearly feeding on the plentiful fish around. We stayed in this area a long term, in awe of all the whales around us! Among the whales we also saw 2 minke whales, Getting their fill. It was truly a spectacle to behold! A few porpoises were also spotted along the way. This meant we got a look at Faxaflói's smallest cetacean as well, putting into perspective the sheer size and power of the humpbacks!

12:00 - The weather was as calm as before and excited about the morning's sightings, we hastily made our way out again. First, we saw 2 shy white-beaked dolphins, after We again found the 10 or more humpback whales from the morning. The feeding frenzy had seemingly intensified from the morning and we saw an incredibly amount of lunge-feeding and even a pair of whales bubblenet feeding! We spent our time with these whales, travelling between them to get close-up looks at as many as possible. 4 minke whales were also sighted, as well as a few harbour porpoises.

15:00 - We still had great weather conditions this afternoon and so we once again tried our luck. This tour we counted a total of 9 humpback whales. The feeding had seemingly stopped and it appeared as some of them had decided on a post lunch nap. This allowed us an intimate look at a pair of sleepy whales. We then travelled on between the other whales until we ended up in an encounter with a very curious pair! They circled our boat a few times and came so close we could almost touch them! Once again, 3-4 minke whales were around, as well as some harbour porpoises, 2 of them which seemed to have taken interest in a pair of humpbacks and stuck with them for just a bit. On the way back, we were also surprised by a huge pod of around 30 white-beaked dolphins! Very actively travelling and often leaping out the water. This was a perfect ender for an incredible day at sea!
