Whale Diary

12:00 - The winter had set in overnight and covered the mountain Esja as well as all the mountains on the horizon, creating a winter wonderland around us. We started our adventure southward, as we heard that North had been a bit quiet in the morning. We thoroughly searched the south before heading up North to see if anyone was feeding in that area. While we believe we spotted a blow, we went to the area and no cetaceans appeared. We searched high and low, covering the bay as thoroughly as possible, but alas our cetaceans were not to be found. So we handed out complimentary tickets for everyone to try again on one of our classic whale watching tour.

15:00 - As we set sail this afternoon we had some snowflakes coming down, so we layered up and headed out into the bay. As we entered the bay we spotted one harbor porpoise. this individual gave us one surface sequence before they continued and so we also sailed on. We shortly after spotted one minke whale. There was a total of 3 individuals in this area and we were able to catch two surface sequences from this species before it was time to continue. Further out into the bay we found a pod of 4 white-beaked dolphins. These individuals were very curious and kept swimming around us! It was amazing to watch them swim through the water and we even managed to see them jump! It seemed like we had two younger very curious individuals and two adults. After multiple surface sequences and a really amazing encounter, we waved out cetaceans goodbye and headed back to port. What a nice tour!
