Whale Diary

10:00 - The weather today was really nice with really calm seas. We went out of the harbor and stopped by Engey to see some puffins and we got really lucky as there were lots of them on the burrows and flying around us. We then sailed on and eventually found a couple of minke whales that were surrounded by a fair amount of northern gannets plunging in the water. After a while we also spotted a pod of 5 white beaked dolphins that were really curious and came really close to our boat. We then sailed towards the harbor and after a few minutes we spotted another pod of playful white beaked dolphins.

11:00 - It was overcast as we sailed out into the bay this morning but the sea was calm. After a while we saw splashes of some dolphins breaching near a small fishing boat. It turned out to be a pod of about 6 white-beaked dolphins. They seemed to be interested in the boat and we turned off the engine for what became an amazing encounter. They were swimming under the boat, spy hopping and doing back rolls! When we left they followed us and surfed the bow wave. A little further we saw a large flock of feeding seabirds. We slowed down and with the birds there were 4/5 minke whales that gave us great views! Before we headed back for harbour we briefly revisitied the dolphins. A wonderful trip.

14:00 - Sea condidons were perfect as we sailed out in the afternoon. We soon spotted some harbour porpoises and saw them surface a few times before we moved on. Further south in the bay we found a Minke Whale that came up several times including close to the boat so we all got good views. After that we moved on and saw a pod of white-beaked dolphins near another boat. They approached our boat, swam under it and surfed the bow wave! A wonderful encounter. We later found another pod of at least 5 white-beaked dolphins before we ran out of time and had to head back to harbour. Another great trip.
