Whale Diary

09:00 - A good tour overall this morning to start the day. We set out in fair weather, even if windier than yesterday. We drove straight out, and we covered a very wide area of search, but we werent having any luck, until bingo! A pod of around 7 white beaked dolphins surrounded us! And they would not leave us alone. They were very playful, swimming repeateadly around the boat and playing hide and seek every time we wanted to leave them to their own. Even though this was a very good find, we gave out complimentary tickets to come back again free of charge because we found the dolphins right at the end of the tour.

10:00 - The weather was already cold for September, but it was a nice refreshing chill. The waves were choppy, but the guest enjoyed it! We didn't have to go far, when we found the first cetaceans - a pod of 5 White Beaked Dolphins. They were playing in the waves and also in our bow wave. They traveled next to our boat and swam underneath the boat and after a while disappeared. So we kept moving to find some more animals. We saw 3 Minke Whales in close proximity to each other, but only 1 of them was surfacing a few times, so we could see it very well. Then we heard that another boat found a Humpback Whale, so we quickly moved towards the location. As we got there it was still underwater diving, so we waited a few minutes and then it came up again. It was taking a few breaths and then dove again. It repeated this pattern with us waiting for it and it showing us its beautiful fluke for 4 times. Unfortunately then it was time for us to go back to harbor again. but with happy faces !

12:00 - Brilliant tour! We took a different approach for this tour, sailing northwards all along the coast towards Akranes and then turning back South deep into the bay. And the gamble paid off! We found several minke whales, around 4 of them. Some of them were very visible, lunge feeding. It was super nice. And then, we saw in the distance the unmistakable blows of 2 humpback whales! We drove towards one of them, and it delighted us with a few fluke dives, before it was time to say goodbye and head home.
