Whale Diary

10:00 - We ventured into a sea with good weather conditions for a sea safari tour. We stopped by the island of Engey, where our passengers saw many of the island's bird species, including the cute and iconic puffin. We then slowly left the island and ventured into deeper waters to look for the larger animals. We rapidly spotted a pod of some 10 white-beaked dolphins, however, we soon left these animals, to avoid disturbing them, as they were acting shy. Yet, the next animal did not act shy at all. This was a minke whale, who surfaced various times very close to our boat. The next species we saw was a humpback whale, who was calmy swimming and fluke-diving, as we quietly contemplated it from a distance. Before finishing the tour, we had one more amazing sighting, this time of a small group of white-beaked dolphins, who were acting way more social than the first one, breaching and approaching our boat.

14:00 - After a quick stop at the Atlantic puffin colony on Akurey, we headed out onto the gloomy bay, hopeful and eager to spot some cetaceans. We were rather quickly interrupted by a small pod of harbour porpoises, always a special treat to see these shy little guys. We then continued on, and had to cover quite a bit of distance, but we did end up spotting a pair of rather curious white-beaked dolphins! We got a nice close-up look at these beautiful creatures before continuing on into the bay, admiring the seabirds flying around us, such as the majestic Arctic terns, Northern gannets and Northern fulmars. We did see some signs of a very sneaky minke whale, but it was feeling a bit shy as well, and as we were running out of time, we had to start heading back towards Reykjavik. We handed out complimentary tickets to all our lovely passengers, so that they may come back and spot cetaceans with us again!
