Whale Diary

10:00 - We have another beautiful, warm sunny day today! On our way out of Reykjavik, we stopped at Akurey to see lots of adorable puffins and then continued on in search of larger animals out in the bay. It didn't take us long to find a pod of 5 white-beaked dolphins. This pod was acting a little bit anti-social this morning. We were able to see them a few times but they weren't interested in coming close to the boat so we left them alone and continued with our search. Not long after we spotted 2 minke whales! These were also not too interested in us, but they synchronised their surfacing once for us and we were able to see them a couple times before they disappeared. We then headed on and found a pair of humpback whales! These whales were feeding, surrounded by a large flock of arctic terns. They were changing directions a lot but staying in the same area so we were able to get some SUPER close encounters with them! An incredible experience! One of the whales unfortunately had some very big scars from a boat propellor but seemed to have healed well and looked healthy. After an amazing with these individuals, we had to head back into the harbour.

14:00 - We headed out with beautiful weather, the sun was shining and it was warm. We went to the spot of the previous tour, but on the way we found the first of the 2 Humpback Whales, that we were about to see on this tour. It was one of the Humpbacks we saw on the earlier tour. It had a big scar on it's back. Probably from a boat propellor. It was surfacing quite a lot and showed us it's beautiful fluke ! After a while we left it and went to see the second whale. It showed itself "only" two times, so we decided to leave it alone and see if we would find the first Humpback again. And we did. It granted us one last glimpse on his fluke, and then we had to leave. Luckily we still had the puffin island to go to, so we didn't have to go back to reality right away. We could enjoy the peaceful and more quiet atmosphere of the puffins. But all good things must come to an end, so we headed back to the harbor, with happy guests and happy crew. :)
