Whale Diary

10:00 - The sea conditions were great this morning as we sailed out after a little puffin stop at Akurey. There were many seabirds feeding in the bay and we soon saw some minke whales among them. There were 3-4 of them but also many boats so we decided to move further out into the bay. There were many more minke whales and we estimate that at least 10 were seen on the tour! We then encountered a pod of about 12 white-beaked dolphins that were very playful and approached the boat swam under it and rode the bow wave. On the way back we saw 6-7 harbour porpoises relaxing in the surface. Delighted, we returned to harbour after a great tour.

12:00 - After stopping for some puffin action at Akurey, we headed out into the bay and it didn't take long before we found our first whales! 2 minke whales! We got very lucky, with both minkes surfacing fairly close to the boat but once they went for deep dives, we continued our search as we had seen some splashes in the distance. When we got to the area, we saw that there was a very large pod of 20-25 white-beaked dolphins spread out. They started splitting into smaller groups and we were surrounded! Lots of the dolphins were bow riding and a group of smaller, younger ones were playing and jumping very close to us! It was amazing! Once the dolphins got tired of us we headed to the large groups of birds we were seeing and were lucky enough to see at least 7 minke whales, some close and some far away. On our way back to the harbour, we found another pod of 10 white-beaked dolphins that were also really playful with our boat! Even though we were running out of time, they didn't want to let us leave!

14:00 - The sea conditions looked a bit rougher as we headed out in the afternoon but it actually turned out to be quite calm once we got out there. We soon found a pod of about 4 harbour porpoises that gave us nice views. As we experienced in the morning there was a lot of life in the bay. We could even see the schools of lesser sand-eels that the whales and the birds were going for swimming just under the calm surface. We encountered many minke whales in the area including two that surfaced together right next to the boat, amazing! A total of about 10 minke whales were seen on the tour. We then met a pod of about 10 - 12 white-beaked dolphins that gave us some great views surfacing and breaching around the boat. On the way back we visited the puffins at Akurey before returning to harbour after another great wildlife encounter.

16:00 - As we headed out we had a good weather, a little rough sea, but it was fine. We went back to the spot we've last seen whales the tour before. We were lucky, because we found 3 Minke Whales. A little later and a few miles further we found a pod of 7 White Beaked Dolphins. Our guest had a great time and also during the end the sun came out.

20:00 - The weather was really warm and the sea was relatively flat. We headed out of the harbor and after a while a white beaked dolphin showed up right next to our boat. After a couple of minutes we found what we think were 3 different pods of white beaked dolphins. There were about 20-25 dolphins and they were all really playful with each other and with our boat, as they were bow riding and jumping all around us. As we carried on a few of them even followed our rib for a couple of minutes. After a while we encountered 4 minke whales and they came really close to our rib as they seemed to be engaging in feeding behavior. At this point we were also surrounded by northern gannets, arctic terns, northern fulmars, razorbills and some common guillemots so it was quite the feast! At this point it was time to head back to the harbor but we still had some minutes to spare so we stopped by Akurey to see some puffins. All in all it was an amazing tour.
