Whale Diary

09:00 - Here we go for another tour in this amazing weather! Almost no wind and no waves, the conditions looked perfect for a whale watching tour. As we were heading out of Reykjavík, we saw a big splash, and another, and another! It was a whale breaching for sure! As we got closer, it stopped but we could tell for sure we had a humpback whale! There were a lot of birds around us, and all of a sudden even more humpbacks too! There were about 15 in total in this feeding area! There were also 2 minke whales and 5 harbour porpoises! It was easy after that, they were all milling around, easy to follow and to see, couldn't ask for anything better than that. A truly whale soup!

12:00 - We headed back out, with a bit more of wind, in the direction of the whale soup we had seen before! About 20 minutes we saw our first blow and on the way there a minke whale popped up right next to us and vanished! We continued towards that blow that multiplied! In total there were still about 15 humpback whales in the area all feeeeeeding! There were still some 5 harbour porpoises and they were curious too! While we were following a few feeding whales, 3 of them just simply swam veeery close to the boat! Very lucky we were!! After this we spotted a big splash and we went there. It was another humpback tail slapping! We got really lucky seeing that so close. A few more flukes and we were back in the harbour.

15:00 - Third time we go, off into the whale and bird soup waiting for us! This time we had some more radical encounters with a lot of tail slapping, peduncle throwing and a breach! There were at least 20 humpback whales this time, in the whole area. There were also 6 minke whales and 10 harbour porpoises!! A real feast frenzy! Today was a really lucky day and hopefully tomorrow it'll be the same!
