Species seen today: Humpback whales and harbour porpoises

Birds seen today: Atlantic puffins, great cormorant, herring gull, great black-backed gull, lesser black-backed gull, kittiwake, black-headed gull, northern fulmar, black guillemot, common guillemot, eider duck, long-tailed duck

10:00 - On this beautiful sunny day, the first thing on our list was to see the freshly arrived Atlantic puffins on Akurey. Flying by the thousand, the whole sky and sea was covered with those beautiful black, white, and orange seabirds. After a wonderful moment with the puffins, we went out into the bay to search for marine mammals. Thruma IV watched two or three humpback whales in an area with many birds, while Thruma II went a bit further out to observe another humpback whale. Although they were diving quite long, we got a few very close looks at these giants when they surprised us close to our boat. With those beautiful sightings in mind we went back to Reykjavík.

14:00 - The wind came down and the sun was bright this afternoon. We went to Akurey to see thousands of puffins. Some other species like fulmars, eider duck and great cormorants. We left further out to see if we could find the same whales than this morning. After a 20 minutes drive we arrived in a great area with 4-5 humpback whales feeding. They were going on beautiful fluke dives sometimes in the distance and sometimes only a few meters from us. It was really enjoyable to see those large animals peacefully feed. We stayed in the area checking on the different humpback whales until we were out of time and went back home. A great tour!

16:00 The wind continued to be in our favour this late afternoon and we happily sailed towards Akranes to see many puffins flying around and getting accustomed to their place on the island. Next up was our quest for some larger animals. We tried our luck in an area with lots of seabirds flying around and diving for fish, and before we knew it we could see blows everywhere. Four or five humpback whales were feeding in this fish soup, often showing us their impressive and unique flukes as they went for deep dives. At times, the humpbacks appeared right next to our boat and sometimes they even dove underneath us. These incredible sightings made the time fly and we had to leave back to Reykjavík harbour before the wind would pick up again. Before entering the harbour, our captain Gunni had a last surprise in store for us as he gave us a full-speed city sightseeing tour past the shoreline.
