Whale Diary

09:00 - Amazing morning of whale watching today. We set out in incredible weather, not a cloud in the sky and not much wind. After some search, we found a group of white beaked dolphins, around 10 of them. And how nice they were! They were extremely social, and would not leave us alone, even as we tried to move on to other parts of the bay. They kept following us! Eventually we found 2 minke whales also, which were quite good, as they came repeatedly to the surface.

10:00 - We headed out with beautiful sunshine and nice crispy cold temperatures. Out in the bay we found a pod of 7 white beaked dolphins. They first were pretty chill, playing in our bow wave and travelling along side us, when they all of a sudden increased the speed and where having a race with our boat. They were travelling around 14-15 knots fast! Then they disappeared. So we kept going and looking for other wildlife. We did find a minke whale that was surfacing, but then disappeared quite fast. On the radio we heard that another boat had found a humpback whale, so we went there, to check it out. As we arrived there it went down for a dive, so we had to be patient for it to surface again. It did after a quite long time, but we were rewarded with a close up and it's beautiful fluke. We waited a bit longer for it to surface again, when out of nowhere a minke whale popped up right next to our boat. Unfortunately we ran out of time and had to head back to harbor, but happy we saw 2 minkies and a humpback.

13:00 - What an afternoon! Incredible skies, gorgeous weather, lots of seabirds in the sky! We went South, and after some time, found a very playful group of white beaked dolphins, around 10 of them. Like in the morning, they would not stop playing and fooling around, and would not let us leave. Eventually we had to! But then we found many minke whales, around 6, including a very young individual. Some of them were lunge feeding, which was super interesting to watch.

16:00 - Incredible finish for the day! We went South, as we had had great sightings earlier. And the bet paid off! We had a big pod of white beaked dolphins, super playful, many of them very young. Also, several minke whales, and towards the end of tour, a humpback whale!! It was magical.
