Whale Diary

11:00 - This morning we sailed into Faxafloi bay with a bit of swell and grey skies but full of hope! We sailed west searching for signs of wildlife and it didn't take long before we spotted our first whale! Two humpback whales appeared super close to our boat swimming slowly! we stay with these whales for a while and saw them fluke into the depth. Then we decided to continue searching and just a few minutes after we spotted a small pod of 8 white beaked dolphins! They were swimming fast but we had a good look at them before it was time to head back home. As we are passing Engey we spotted a third humpback whale! Amazing!  And while we waited for it to return to the surface to breathe we spotted a minke whale in the distance! A great ending to our tour!

14:00 - This afternoon we layered up and set sail out in to the bay. However, we had yet to reach the bay before we spotted one minke whale! This minke was moving all around the boat and then it suddenly popped up right in front of us three times! It is always a pleasure when this normally elusive species decides to surface so close to us. After multiple surface sequences we continued onward. That was when we found another solitary minke whale! This minke was more elusive and so after a few surface intervals, we left them to feed and sailed out into the bay7. That was when we spotted the dorsal of one harbor porpoise. This individual gave us a few surface intervals before they waved us goodbye and so we continued onward as well. Sailing out further into the bay, we spotted the blow of two humpback whales moving together! After a surface interval, these two gave us the slip and we feared they may not return. However, our perseverance was rewarded as we spotted them again! When we got closer they went for a bit of a dive and so we waited with baited breath hoping they would come up again. Suddenly, from the depths of the bay they rose up right next to the boat! One then swam right under us! We were in for quite the boat inspection, as we could see them through the surface and even smell some of their fishy breath. With such a close encounter we could not believe our luck. After this wonderful time with our humpbacks, we had to wave them goodbye and head back to port. An amazing way to end the day!
