Whale Diary

10:00 - What a great weather! Sun shining and a breeze from the south east as we went out. After a short visit to our feathered friends, the puffins, on the isle of Engey, we went out further to find some whales. And we found them! The huge blows of 4 humpback whales were visible and we got nice and close to them for some great pictures. But it did not stop with the humpbacks. A fast minke whale was also in the area as well as a pod of around 15 white-beaked dolphins. These playful guys found an interest in the humpbacks and started jumping all around them. It was a great tour out on Faxaflói with three of our main species not just seen during one tour but also at the same time in the same area.

12:00 - It was very warm today so we looked a bit ridiculous in our overalls and hats, but out on the ocean we were very happy to be cozy! The wind was strong and we were getting splashed on our way into Faxafloi. We checked out some cool birds, like Nothern gannets and Artic terns, and suddenly we saw a small cloud in the middle of the sun glare. It was the blow of a humpback whale! We eagerly waited for this one to surface again and then it was very close! You could hear the blow, see the pectoral fins trough the surface and it even passed under us! Just as we had to leave, this whale did a beautiful fluke dive. A perfect goodbye! On our way back we stopped at Akurey for a visit to the puffins. There were a lot, swimming and flying all around the boat, a lovely end to our adventure!

14:00 - Whales were everywhere this afternoon! We counted 9 humpback whales, saw a few harbour porpoises, and on our way back we had a bonus sighting of 5 white-beaked dolphins. Two of the humpbacks were tailslapping, waving their pectoral fin and even breaching! The humpback whales were spread out, but with these surface active behaviours they were probably communicating with each other. While the sighting with the porpoises was brief, the dolphins swam right up to the boat. To top it all off, there were thousands of Atlantic puffins flying around us, and we also spotted lots of northern gannets.

20:00 - We had clear skies and small wavelets at sea, meaning that the conditions were quite pleasant for whale-watching. We did a quick stop at Akurey island to see the puffins in their breeding colony, before heading out to search for whales. Our first sighting was of a humpback whale, surfacing multiple times in multiple locations. The whale was likely feeding and was a bit hard to approach, so we left it be to avoid disturbing it. We quickly found another humpback though, which was way easier to approach. A third humpback was swimming close by, and over the horizon, we could count up to 10 different humpbacks, spreaded throughout the bay. After spending some nice time with these whales, we came across two white-beaked dolphins, who briefly investigated our boats, before we continued sailing back to Reykjavík.
