Whale Diary

10:00 - Our tour was phenomenal! We started it by first visiting the puffins on Engey Island, where our passengers had a good look at the hundreds of puffin that live in this island, during their breeding season. Right after this, we headed into deeper waters to look for larger animals. This didn't take long, as soon we were in the presence of a humpback whale. This individual looked familiar and was likely one which we've been having in Faxaflói bay, over the last few days. It showed a very calm, relaxed behaviour. At some point, it got curious with our presence and did a "spy-hop" extremely close to our boat, taking its head out to spy on us. After having a good luck at this amazing whale, we turned back and returned to Reykjavík, with smooth seas, a sunny sky and many happy faces.

12:00 - Our adventure began right away at Akurey Island, home to thousands of puffins basking in the warm sunlight. Soon after, we headed out into the open waters in search of something bigger. Within just five minutes, we encountered a playful pod of five harbour porpoises. They were curious and stayed with us for a while, creating an unforgettable moment. Our journey continued, and before long, our efforts were rewarded we found a minke whale. She was calm and graceful, staying close to the boat for quite some time. Eventually, it was time to head back toward Reykjavík Harbour, full of excitement and unforgettable memories from the day.

14:00 - This afternoon we had quite the sightings! With calm seas and sunny skies we set sail into the bay. First we encountered a pod of 4 harbor porpoises! They gave us a few really nice surface sequences and then off they went on their travels! So onward we went as well. We then spotted the back of one minke whale! We were able to see multiple surfaces and we even got to smell their ´stinky minke´ breath; what a treat! Traveling onward, we spotted a pod of 5 white-beaked dolphins! This included a calf which was so special to encounter. We hung out with them for a bit and then left them too it as we got word of another cetacean in the area. To finish off on our sightings we ended with a beautiful view of one humpback whale! We got great views of our humpback and were treated to seeing its fluke twice! With all of our common species sighted, we counted ourselves to be incredibly lucky and we set back to harbor.

16:00 - We sailed under clear skies and calm seas toward the open waters . Before long, we spotted a pod of white backed dolphins gliding through the waves. We stayed with them for quite a while, amazed by there playful energy  until a humpback whale appeared behind them. For a few magical minutes, the dolphins and the humpback swam together in harmony before the dolphins vanished into the the deep. The humpback stayed with us for long treating us with breathtaking moments. After a nice fluke dive we let her continue her journey and we set course to Akurey island, where we enjoyed our lovely puffins.

20:00 - The weather was good this evening with a calm sea and a sunny sky. We started to go observe the puffins in Akurey were thousands of them were flying around. We were on two boats so one went south the other north to cover more areas. The boat in the south spotted a first pod of 3 harbour porpoises but they were quite shy then a second pod of 6 harbour porpoises more active and easy to observe this time. A bit later the boat in the north spotted one humpback whale, then a second one! Our boats joined and we observed this whale for a while. It was swimming towards west and going frequently on fluke dives. Its breathes were quite low and the animal was doing some strong movements with its tail so we decided to leave this individual some space in case we were annoying it. On the way back one of the boat spotted a pod of 4 white beaked dolphins that were calmy swimming north.
