Whale Diary

10:00 - The waves were a bit choppy when we set off to find whales this morning so there were a few splashes. To begin with we stopped at a puffin island to have a look at the cute little birds. Then we headed further out. Once we got here we noticed there was a lot of wildlife around. We were lucky enough to spend time with 2 humpbacks whales along with many white beaked dolphins. Unusually the dolphins were mostly solitary, but quite likely part of a very spread out pod. At one point one of the whales started to roll as well as a potential tail slap! So this was really cool. At different points the whales came very close to both boats this morning. We then headed back with the waves so it was more gentle after a great start to the day.

12:00 - We navigated in choppy waters at the beginning of the tour but after a short time the weather became fair and we saw in the horizon a humpback whale breaching. We came by and had a good sighting of her. We then decided to explore the area and got to see two other humpbacks. Before we went back to the harbour after a fantastic tour!

14:00 - The wind had calmed a bit this afternoon so no splashes, yay! We headed to the same area as earlier in the day and it didn't take too long for us to come across a pod of 5-6 white beaked dolphins. There was a calf here too which was really nice to see. We watched them for a little before heading further out to the blows. Here we got to watch a lovely humpback whale going for quite a few fluke dives. There were also more dolphins out here too. Lots of them were porpoising through the water. We then headed a bit further out again. We came across a very elusive minke whale that only surfaced twice. But then we saw a big splash and had found another humpback. We got to see this one surfacing quite a bit now too. It looked like a different individual to all the ones we have been seeing regularly over the last few weeks. Then we headed back and saw a few more dolphins before stopping at Akurey to see lots of puffins again!

16:00 - Conditions were somewhat choppy as we headed out in to the bay, making a stop on the way out to see the Atlantic puffins at Akurey. There were hundreds of birds on the water and flying around, getting ready to head back out to the North Atlantic for the winter. With grey skies and grey seas we got a little splashed on the way as the swell was building. We sighted some feeding birds and were lucky to see a humpback blow. Then as we were approaching the humpback whale breached! It seemed that there were at least two and maybe three individuals in the area and being a little bit elusive, but with some excellent driving we were able to see some great flukes and plenty of blows. All too soon it was time to head back to the harbour but we were treated to a few glimpses of white beaked dolphins on the way home!
