Whale Diary

09:00 - It was fair weather this morning for the first tour of the day, and we were all hopeful after the good sightings of yesterday. We sailed for about 30 minutes straight out into the bay, and bingo! In the same area, we found several minke whales and white beaked dolphins. The minkes were 4 different individuals, and the dolphins were in 2 different pods, the first one of maybe 4 animals and the second one of around 10. This second pod was amazing. The dolphins were extremely playful, exhibiting behaviours rarely seen, like rolling around and belly-showing. They came quite close to the boat as well. It was a very successful tour.

10:00 - We headed out the harbor with cloudy but not cold weather, the sea was just a little bumpy. It didn't take us that long to find the first animals, which were a pod of 6 white beaked dolphins. They were playing around our boat, surfing in the bow wave. After a while we decided to leave them in peace and find something else. And we did, we found a minke whale that was surfacing around us a few times. Then it disappeared and we moved on in our journey. We found another pod of white beaked dolphins again and stayed for a little while with them, until it was time to go back again.

12:00 - We started off with high hopes as we had had good tours in the morning. We sailed for quite some time, covering as much area as possible, and we eventually found 1 minke whale and a pod of 5 white beaked dolphins. Even though it was very nice, not everybody saw the minke and the dolphins were a bit elusive, so we gave out complimentary vouchers to come back again.
