Whale Diary

10:00 - We started with cracking ice in the harbor and sunshine and freshly cold - 5 degrees. We had to sail for a bit until we spotted a blow. So we stopped where we last seen it and waited a little while for it to come up again, which it did. It was a Humpback Whale, that showed us it's fluke 2 times. Since it was very occupied feeding, we left it to it and where looking for something else. Soon we found a Minke Whale which was surfacing a few times and then left us. As we continued our journey we found a pod of 7 White Beaked Dolphins, which were resting and surfacing frequently and then all at once as a little goodbye for us, because we had to head back to port.

13:00 - Another wonderful tour on another day of great weather! We left with absolutely clear skies, and not far from the harbour we had our first sightings! We came across many minke whales, and they were very active, doing lots of lunge feeds. Next we moved South, and eventually spotted the blow of a humpback whale! Everybody was super excited. We sailed that way, and the great whale gave us a couple of fluke dives before we headed home. On the way back we spotted around 6 harbour porpoises. It was a wonderful tour.

15:00 - The weather was perfect on the last tour of the day, the sun was shining and the sea was flat. We didn't have to go far until we found 3 Humpback Whales ! They were traveling together in a very calm manner. They were surfacing often and teased us by not showing us their flukes, but in the end we did see them, which was really beautiful ! We decided to leave them be and went on for the search of more cetaceans. We did find more, we found loads of Minke Whales all around us, close and far. Around 8-10. Then we spotted another Humpback Whale which was not showing it's fluke, he was just taking a deep dive all of a sudden and after around 5 minutes he breached behind the boat, after that he was pec slapping and then surfacing a few times, when we had to leave him, because we were running out of time. What a great ending to the day !
