Whale Diary

10:00- When we were heading out of the harbour, we heard from another captain that there was a humpback so we headed out to that area. When we got there, we heard that it had been diving for a long time so we waited for a little while but it didn't come up so we decided to try and find something else. We cruised around for a while but didn't see anything. We headed back to the first area we were in but in the distance saw a different blow. We found another humpback! This one was much better to watch, coming up multiple times and we even saw the fluke!

11:00 - As we were navigating away from Akurey we checked the plotter and saw the most of the boats were stopped in the same area and decided to head this way scouting the horizon for blows or other sign of wild life. After a while without much happening we went to with the other vessels as they were living back to town. There was a humpback whale that was a bit shy but we managed to get close to it and see here dive and show her back and tales few times. On our way back to land we noticed a Minke Whaleand took a sharp turn to get on the position of the blow. Quiet soon after we were at the position the whale started appearing around us and showing interest in the boat, we were all very happy to see her displaying behaviors like sending huge bubbles on the surface of the water close to the RIB or watching her white patches and body through the ocean as she was hanging at the surface spending time with us. one last blow and good bye.

14:00- Despise a bit of rain the weather was fair we saw birds on the way to a potential humpback location and noticed quickly after a Minke Whale we were wondering if it was one or two as the places we notices her surfacing were at opposits of the boat. After a while we headed to the area were other boats spotted a humpback and indeed had the chance to see it. The whale was resting and diving for long. we still managed to have a very good sighting with it, the animal at some point stayed close to the surface for a few minutes. After a beautiful fluke dive we went back home.

15:00- The seas were still nice and calm this afternoon making it great conditions for spotting. Not too long into the tour, we saw a small pod of white-beaked dolphins. There were around 6 of them but as we watched them some swam away. We were left with 3 very curious dolphins that came up next to the boat and bow rided a lot. We could even see their white stripes through the water! We left the dolphins and headed over to a large group of feeding birds. We watched the gannets diving and suddenly saw 2 minke whales! They were feeding under the birds and coming up to the surface a few times. A really nice way to end the day!
