Whale Diary

10:00 -  We started with a great sighting of puffins and other sea birds then sail towards the whales, we saw a Humpback whale, then many Minke whales were swimming around our boats in all directions! We then hit quiet a rough and wet weather but were luck enough to have white beak dolphins playing in the wake of our boat to close the tour.

12:00 - 'Twas a grey afternoon but kitted with our cosy overalls we sailed out. We stopped at Akurey on the way out and marveled at the puffins, which were still plentiful even at this time of the year as the puffins will slowly start to leave. We then headed out into the bay and saw 3 minke whales, they took it in turns to come close to us and appeared quite randomly sometimes close and sometimes far. We then headed further and saw 3 white beaked dolphins, that were similar in nature and swam around us for a bit. We then spotted a few blows on the horizon but found it difficult to see who it belonged to. We then saw a few more minkes again, some quite close and some more tricky! Eventually we ran out of time and headed back home!

20:00 - We set out under a stunning sunset sky for the evening tour. After about half an hour, we spotted our first blow — a beautiful humpback whale surfacing for a good look. Not long after, a second whale breached in the distance, sending up a big splash. As we drew closer, more and more blows appeared on the horizon — at least 7 or 8 humpbacks in the area! We followed a group of three that were feeding together, their movements perfectly in sync. Around us, we also saw about five minke whales surfacing now and then, quick and elusive among the waves. It was a amazing evening surrounded by whales.
