Whale Diary

10:00 - On our morning tour today, we still had really flat, calm seas that were perfect for whale watching! Not long after our stop for the puffins we had our first sighting - a large pod of around 40 white-beaked dolphins spread out over a large area. They were very playful and the sea was so calm that we could clearly see their whole bodies through the water. After spending some time with these dolphins surfing in our wake and bow riding at the front of our boat, we decided to move on. Very close by we found a humpback whale! This individual was very calm and swam slowly when it was at the surface. We weren't lucky enough to see this whale's tail but we found a second humpback that was more willing to show off their fluke! This whale was also a bit sleepy this morning but still surfaced very close to our boat a few times. Then, after being with this whale for a while we had to start heading back in towards the harbour. A great start to the day!

12:00 - We sailed out in a very calm sea. After a while we spotted a blow that we approached carefully and it was caused by a humpback whale. We got to see its fluke several times and were very close to it. In total we encountered 5 individuals, two of them did not leave each others side. We also saw a feeding minke whale a few hundred meters away. Amazing tour!

14:00 - After a quick stop to see the puffins, we headed out into the bay and it didn't take us too long to find 4 humpback whales! They a little spread out within the same area but two of them were swimming and feeding side by side! We were lucky enough the see all 4 of their flukes and have them surface close to our boat a few times. All of the whales were feeding and were being followed by a group of arctic terns that were picking up any fish that managed to escape the whales. As we were watching the last whale, and just before we headed back to the harbour, the whale did one last big lunge feed right next to the boat! Incredible!

16:00 - In the afternoon, the wind picked up a lot so the seas were quite bumpy but it was well worth it! The first humpback whale that we saw was tail slapping, peduncle throwing and trumpeting. All signs of a grumpy whale! We watched from a distance until the whale tired itself out and swam away from us. We moved on and found a second humpback that was also tail slapping at first. It then began to feed and came up very close to our boat a couple of times. Then in the distance we saw a big splash! It was a humpback breaching! We sailed over and got to see it breach multiple times up close! Then it started slapping the water with its pectoral fins and rolling onto its back! It tried to do a couple more breaches but was obviously getting tired because only its head made it out of the water. Then it started swimming away from us and we had to head back into the harbour. WOW!
