Whale Diary

11:00 - With some showers of rain, we headed out of the harbour and into Faxaflói bay. The wind was coming from the southeast this morning, so our journey out was nice and smooth. We were in communication with some other whale watching boats as we searched some areas popular with the cetaceans. The boats let us know that they had seen something towards the west so we headed in that direction. Once we got there, we waited for a few minutes but then - a blow! It was a solitary humpback whale! This individual was moving around a little when it went for dives but was diving quite at pretty consistent time intervals so we could keep track of it between the waves. We were really lucky a couple of times that it surfaced quite close to the boat so we could see its body through the water! At first it was a little shy with its tail but then it lifted high up out of the water so we could see the bright white under side. After some time watching this individual, one of our RIBs decided to search some other areas and the other stayed with this humpback. Then after a few more surfaces, we started to run out of time and had to turn into the waves and head back towards Reykjavík. Sailing back, against the waves, was a bit bumpy but this added to our fun morning at sea!
