Whale Diary

13:00 - The wind had calmed down a bit this afternoon so we were all excited to head out into the bay! After a little searching, we found a humpback whale! It was our friend Pep! We were able to see her a few times before she went for a dive and then a little while later, we saw blows in the near distance. Mistakenly, we thought it was also Pep but when we got there, we saw it was a second individual! This one we didn't recognise. We watched this second whale for a while and then it joined up with Pep! They started swimming side by side! They both showed us their flukes a couple of times but mostly they were calmly swimming together. When more boats arrived, we decided to explore more areas but were unlucky and didn't find anything else so we headed back to the harbour.

15:00 - As the afternoon continued, the wind dropped even more so the sea conditions were getting better and better as we headed out of the harbour. We sailed straight to the area where we had just left on the previous tour and after a little time searching, we found the 2 humpback whales. As before, they were still swimming together, very relaxed. A few times the came quite close to the boat and the water was so clear today we could see their white pectoral fins through the water, even when they were fairly far away! We had the whales all to ourselves and were able to watch them for a long time. When we were waiting for the humpbacks to surface after a dive, we saw some white patches through the water going underneath the boat. Then a minke whale appeared right behind the boat only once so it must have been the minkes white patches we saw! Amazing! We watched the humpbacks one last time before we headed back to shore and as a wave goodbye they both did beautiful fluke dives for us!
