Whale Diary

10:00 - We headed out with cloudy skys, but calm sea conditions. As we arrived at the spot where we knew whales have been seen, we weren't disappointed. We found 2 Humpback Whales one was on the one side of the Hvalfjörður, the other one on the other side. We spent some time with the first one, which was showing us his very nice fluke dives, then we moved to the other one, which was very calm swimming along us. To not disturb the whale we went to another spot and found a pod of about 20 white-beaked dolphins riding along us. As always all good things must come to an end, so we had to leave and go back to harbor with happy guests.

14:00 - This afternoon, we headed back towards the entrance of Hvalfjörður. Soon after arriving, we spotted a blow by another whale watching boat - it was a humpback whale. This one was moving around a lot and changing directions so it was hard to keep up with it with the increased swell. We decided to move on because not far away a second humpback had been spotted! This one was a lot more relaxed, but was also a lot smaller. It seemed to be a very young whale, maybe this was its first time in Iceland! We stayed with this whale for a while because it was much easier to follow - it was swimming close to the surface in waters that were sometimes only 5 meters deep. After a while, we had to start heading back in to the harbour but on our way back, the whales wouldn't let us leave! We spotted 2 more humpbacks on the way back! Before getting to the harbour, we also made a quick stop at Engey to see some adorable puffins. A great end to an amazing tour!
