Whale Diary

10:00- We sailed out into the beauty of Faxafloi bay and we had a quick stop at Akurey to watch the puffins. After that we sailed out and eventually we found a shy Minke Whale but unfortunately we lost sight of it after a few minutes. We sailed on and after a while we found a Humpback Whale and we were lucky enough to see a couple of flukes and then it was time to go back.

11:00 - After a quick stop to see puffins, we headed out into the bay in search of bigger animals. Soon, we got to the area where the whales have been feeding for the last couple of days. As we arrived, we saw the blow of a Humpback Whale! This indivdual was great to watch, coming up often and when going for deep dives it showed us its fluke. While it was doing the deeper dives, we also spotted 2 minke whales. A couple times the whale came up close to the boat showing off its bright white fins under the water.

14:00- We sailed out into the bay, heading straight to the same area as the morning. When we arrived, there was a Humpback Whale and it was feeding right at the surface! We could see the face of the whale come up above the surface with its mouth open. It was rolling around showing us its belly as well as it expanded with huge mouthfuls of water and fish! A few times the whale came up right next to the boat so close that the passengers got a bit of the whales breath on their faces! An amazing tour!

15:00- The wind was starting to pick up when we left the harbor, and two minutes into our tour we got really lucky and spotted a Minke Whale that was surrounded by northern gannets that were diving close by. After a couple of minutes we left it to go and search for something else and we were able to spot a blow in the distance. When we got closer we realized it was a Humpback Whale. We got really lucky as it went pretty close to the boat and we were evan able to see a couple of flukes. We sailed on and we got to see 2 minke whales before we continued to Akurey to check out the puffins before going home, just as the wind was starting to pick up again. It was such an eventful tour!
