Whale Diary

10:00: We headed out with perfect weather conditions, glassy sea and sunshine. The Puffin Islands were our first stop - amazing! We saw 6 White Beaked Dolphins that were playing in our bow wave and followed us for a few minutes. A little later we saw 1 Minke Whale surfacing a few times, before he did one of his long and deep dives.

12:00: We headed out into the bay on flat calm seas and under shining sun! Not too long into our journey we found a group of 3 white-beaked dolphins. At first we couldn't work out their behaviour. One of them was behaving very strangely, there was some splashing and finally we saw that it was carrying something on its head. Our first thought was that it was a fish that the 3 of them were playing with but as the group came up right next to our boat we saw that it was infact the body of a new born calf. Unfortunately the calf had died and what we were seeing were the three dolphins grieving. They all swam together with the one dolphin carrying the calf up to the surface each time it came up to breathe. After a little while we moved on from this group to let them mourn. After sailing for a little time, we found another group of around 10 white-beaked dolphins. This group was spread out in a large area but were very active and bow rode in front of the boat mulitple times!

14:00: Same great weather conditions that we had in the 10:00 o'clock tour. We sailed out and soon after we came across 3 White Beaked Dolphins. Playing hide and seek with us, by going under the boat and changing directions unexpectedly. We left them after a while and found 3 Minke Whales over the duration of the rest of the tour. They were surfacing and diving, also one of them was not shy and surfaced for 3 times.

16:00: The conditions were amazing this afternoon! After sailing for a little while, we joined another RIB that had found a pod of around 7 white-beaked dolphins. These dolphins were very calm, casually swimming close by the boats multiple times. Within the group, there was a fairly small calf as well so it was surprising the pod was getting so close to us. After a while, the pod got bored of us and moved on, so we went searching for other wildlife. We spotted 2 minke whales in the distance but they were travelling very far on their dives so we couldn't keep up. We were far out in the bay and so had to start heading back to the harbour, but just before we got to one of the puffin islands we had a surprise visit from another Minke Whale, surfacing very close to the boat!

20:00: We sailed out this evening onto a slightly grey moody bay. After a quick stop at Engey to see the puffins we headed right out into the middle. Not long after we spotted a pod of 3 white beaked dolphins. We stayed with them for a bit and then later realised it was 3 but actually 6! Again we followed them for a bit but eventually they continued their journey a little too quick for us. We headed on in the hopes to find another species or another pod however with no luck. In the end we decided to hand out complimentary tickets so that everyone can try again to see the bay in its full glory! On the way back to the harbour it the sun even came out and we got a little bit of midnight sun and stunning views of Reykjavik.
