Whale Diary

10:00 - What a great morning of whale watching! We started with a quick visit to the puffins of Akurey, which are there in big numbers. Then we moved on deep into the bay of Faxafloi, and after not long, we saw our first Humpback Whale. This one was a bit shy, but soon after we saw our second, and this one was very active. It spent a lot of time on the surface, and moved around a lot, giving us very good views of its pectoral fins. It also came very close to the boat, and I mean really close! Everyone could get really good photos. Eventually we caught sight of a third Humpback Whale in the distance, bringing the total count to 3 individuals. In between the show put on by the second whale, 2 minke whales were also in the area. Plenty of Northern gannets were fishing in the same spot as well. It was wonderful.

11:00 - There were hundreds of puffins in and around Akurey as we heded out. We sailed to an area were our previous trip had a great experience. There were dozens of Gannets diving for fish and soon we saw some minke whales surfacing. Then a Humpback Whale came up. We stayed in the area for a long while enjoying this wonderful wildlife encounter. Twice the humpack whale surfaced right next to the boat and we all got some amazing views! There were at least 2 humpback whales and several minke whalesin the area.

14:00 - The sea conditions had deterorated somewhat when we headed out again. Before too long we encountered a Humpback Whale that acted rather shy but it surfaced repeatedly and we were lucky enough to have it come very close to the boat on two occasions. We then sailed to the area were where most of the feeding activity was still goning on with many gannets diving for fish and many other birds around. We caught a glimpse of a Minke Whale and then we had great encounters with two humpback whales. Another great trip!

15:00 - We headed to the main feeding ground of the day where all the whales had been seen previously and were not disappointed when we arrived. We were surrounded by gannets, fulmars and terns all feeding on the fish just below the surface. Soon we saw a Humpback Whale! Tail slapping in the water! In between these huge splashes the whale came up to the surface, making big blows and once came up to breathe right next to the boat, giving us all a bit of a jump! While waiting for the humpback to surface we also saw 2 minke whales also feeding on the plentiful fish. Just as we were slowly starting to leave the area as our time was running out we came across another small Humpback Whale that was a little bit less energetic but it was still great to see it surfacing and the fluke as a goodbye when we left.
