Whale Diary

10:00 - The sea conditions were good and the sun was shining as we sailed out after a beautiful little puffin stop at Engey. After some searching we found a pod of about 6 white-beaked dolphins that were very playful and approached the boat, swam under it and breached several times! They stayed with us for a while but then we decided to move on and search elsewhere. By some other boats that were just off Grotta lighthouse we saw the blow of a Humpback Whale. We saw it surface a few times showing the fluke when it went for a dive. It turned out to be a known idividual by the name of Aang, probably a male, that has been seen in the bay since 2019. Some people also saw some harbour porpoises in the same area. In the end we had to return to harbour after a lovely wildlife encounter.

12:00 - We headed straight out into the bay on our tour today to try and see the Humpback Whale that had been seen in the morning. However, after searching around the areas it had last been seen in, we could not find it. We decided to move on and check some other areas of the bay. After a little while we smelled the very distinctive smell of a Minke Whale's breath. We slowed down our boat to more carefully search the area but could not spot the whale! We started to get to the end of our tour time so headed back to the previous humpback area but we were still unlucky. The whales were a bit shy on our tour the afternoon, so we offered everyone complimentary tickets to come whale watching again on one of our Classic tours.

14:00 - On this tour we started with watching our beloved puffins. Everyone enjoyed them, but then we headed out to look for whales. Unfortunately we couldn't find any whales, but we did see two harbour porpoises instead. Even after looking for some whales we couldn't find any, also the tour time came to an end and we had to go back. We gave the guest complimantary tickets so they can join a whale watching tour again on one of our classic tours.

16:00 - In the afternoon, the wind had made the water a bit choppier which added to the fun of the RIB ride! We went out on 2 boats at this time so decided to spread out in the bay to search as large an area as possible. We first started with the area where another tour had seen the Humpback Whale most recently, however we didn't spot it. Knowing that whales can move very fast, we headed far out into the bay, almost getting to Keflavik! On one boat, the captain caught a glimpse of some dolphins but they never reappeared. As we were so far from the harbour we had to start heading back in after we spent some time looking for the dolphins. We were unfortunately unlucky on this tour so everyone onboard was given complimentary tickets to try again in the future on one of our Classic tours.

20:00 - With only a light westerly wind and a bright midnight sun, the sea was calm today and the temperature was surprisingly mild for Icelandic standards. After a stop at Engey to observe Atlantic puffins in their breeding habitat, we motored out to sea in search of marine mammals. We found a pod of 6 or 7 white-beaked dolphins who were very curious about our boat. All around us, individuals kept popping up and swimming underneath us - it was hard to know where to look! We spent a good moment with the dolphins as they seemed equally interested to watch us as we enjoyed watching them. Before we knew it, the time was up and we started heading back towards Reykjavík. About halfway back we stumbled upon another pod of probably 10 white-beaked dolphins that were socialising with each other. When they swam away towards the sunset, we officially said goodbye and went back to the harbour.
