Whale Diary

14:00 - We started off with a great start, seeing a beautiful humpback whale doing some beautiful fluke dives next to us. We saw some great activity in the form of repeated peduncle throws in the distance and aimed to check it out. As we got closer we had two humpbacks approach us much closer. We decided to stay with these individuals since the activity in the distance had calmed down too. These humpback whales came amazingly close to the boat which left the passengers absolutely speechless. We then went to two more individuals. In the horizon we noticed some splashes and wanted to head further. It was a pod of around 20-30 white beaked dolphins. They truly put on a show, jumping, surfing in the waves, tail slapping and even mating! The mating was very unique to see and we got to see a variety of different behaviors. We had the wonderful privilege of spending quality time with this pod. We were eventually craving some bigger species, and got delivered with two humpback whales. They got close to the boat and then waved us goodbye with a beautiful fluke dive. Throughout the tour we also had short surface sequences of about 4 minke whales. All in all, an amazing tour!

16:00 - Our afternoon started with sunny skies and just a bit of swell as we sailed further out into the bay. After about half an hour of sailing we spotted our first minke whale! It resurfaced a couple of times before disappearing in the ocean so we decided to continue our trip. Just after a few minutes we spotted a blow- humpback whale! swimming calmly! And then more blows and whales started to show up! In the area we could see about 5 humpback whales and about 6-7 minkes ! A great afternoon of feeding for the whales of Faxafloi!

20:00 - This evening, the weather was perfect. We had a gorgeous sunset a head of us streaked with clouds, though the water was a little choppy. Our first stop was for a minke whale, which surfaced several times but stayed shy. Another was nearby, just as elusive as the previous one. However, we could take a good view of their dorsal fins every time they surfaced. Then we moved on to a humpback whale, which treated us to a series of stunning fluke dives, always a thrill to see. On the horizon, we spotted multiple blows and decided to sail out. It was worth it: we found a mother humpback and her calf, along with another adult. The three of them were bubble net feeding and lunge feeding again and again, surrounded by at least four more humpback whales in total. Absolutely magical against the colorful evening sky. As the sun dipped lower, we turned back to port, running out of time but extremely happy with what we have seen.
