Whale Diary

09:00 - This morning, we had beautiful sunshine but the sea was quite wavy and there was a bit of wind so our passengers experienced a truly Icelandic tour. We headed out from the harbour and started our search. After sailing for a little while, we found an area with many many birds! They were surrounding us! Flying, diving, swimming! There must have been a lot of fish. Just next to all these birds, that's where we found our first humpback whale! It was also making the most of the breakfast buffet and was taking short dives. We were able to see it really nicely through the waves and a few times, it came super close to our boat. We were even treated to a beautiful fluke dive! There were some other whale watching boats not too far away and they told us on the radio that they had seen a second humpback whale. We decided to head over to see the second individual as well, to make sure that we were not staying with the same whale for too long. This whale was also feeding! It was wonderful to see two individuals in a very similar area, both feeding amongst the birds. After a while, we unfortunately had to go back to the harbour, after a quick drive-by of the Sun Voyager. A brilliant start to the day!

12:00 - On our midday tour, we sailed out of the harbour full of optimism after the morning and we started to head towards the same area. After searching a little bit we were surprised when a humpback whale surfaced right next to our boat! This whale was still feeding but wasn't staying at the surface too much so after watching it for a little while, we decided to move on as we had seen another blow not too far away. This second humpback was much more active at the surface! It was also feeding but showing off too! Not long after we arrived, we saw it do a lunge feed at the surface and roll onto its back so we could see its huge mouth and belly full of fish! It continued to feed around us, coming close at times and even doing some vertical lunges right next to the boat! An incredible encounter! We were amazed by this whale but unfortunately, our time was starting to run out and we had to head back to the harbour with great memories and full camera rolls!

15:00 - On our last tour today the hopes to find the same whales were high! We sailed to the same area with our high hopes and new passengers aboard. On our way to this area one of our boats saw a minke whale briefly and the other boat saw 2 harbor porpoises. Once we arrived the amount of seabirds we spotted were just out of our minds. Impossible to count them, they were everywhere flying around, jumping at the water and catching some fish. Even at our fish finder on board we were able to see the huge amount of fish we had under our position. And of course the whales were there at this giant buffet to eat! One, two ...and three humpback whales in the area! A little bit spread each other but we managed to see the three different whales at their different positions. They were changing directions always as they were in search for more food so we were looking everywhere to find them again. Lot of pictures, lot of videos and an unforgettable moment for our clients.
