The Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis) is one of the most commonly seen seabirds on our tours in Faxaflói Bay, easily recognized by its stocky build, stiff-winged flight, and tube-like nostrils, characteristic of the petrel family. These hardy birds come in a variety of color morphs, from pale gray and white to darker, almost charcoal hues. Northern Fulmars are masterful gliders, often skimming low over the waves, and they feed on fish, squid, and other marine life, scavenging when the opportunity arises. Their abundance in the bay underscores the richness of Iceland’s marine ecosystems, making them a familiar and fascinating highlight of any trip.
