The Great Skua (Stercorarius skua), a powerful and imposing seabird, is less commonly seen on our tours in Faxaflói Bay compared to its Arctic counterpart. Recognizable by its bulky build, brown mottled plumage, and broad wings, the Great Skua is a formidable presence in the marine environment. Known for its aggressive nature, it often preys on smaller birds and scavenges from other seabirds, asserting its dominance wherever it appears. While not as frequently spotted, sightings of the Great Skua are always memorable, offering a glimpse into the top tier of Iceland’s seabird food chain and the dramatic life of these skilled predators.
