The Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) is a large, striking seabird often seen on our tours in Faxaflói Bay. With its dark, glossy plumage, white patch on the throat, and powerful build, the Great Cormorant is a masterful hunter. These birds are expert divers, plunging beneath the surface to chase fish with agility and speed. Frequently observed perched on rocks or buoys with wings outstretched to dry, they are a familiar and iconic part of the coastal landscape. The Great Cormorant’s regular presence highlights the rich marine resources of Faxaflói Bay and its importance as a habitat for seabirds.
