Whale Safari Guides

Whale Safari Guides

Species seen today: humpback whales, minke whales, white beaked dolphins

After yesterday´s bad weather causing us to cancel, we headed out this morning to see what we could find! The sea conditions were still a bit lumpy but the wind was not too strong. We soon started spotting groups of feeding birds and investigated these as potential good areas for feeding whales. We were not to be disappointed and found an area with three minke whales feeding very vigorously, showing their tail fins as they moved along rapidly on their sides. It was an excellent display of how fast and powerful these small whales are. We spotted some distant humpback blows and headed off in their direction. On the way we sighted large splashes and came across pods of white beaked dolphins being extremely active and jumping out of the water, some very close to the boat. The humpback whales eluded us but we soon spotted another and were able to observe it cruising along the surface and diving. Our other boat also had some great minke sightings and watched the humpback whale as it started tail slapping the water with its powerful fluke. As our boats headed back in it was clear the wind was picking up again with whitecaps becoming more visible in the distance. With the forecasted conditions and swell we had to cancel our remaining tours for the day. Hopefully tomorrow will be better!
