Whale Safari Guides

Whale Safari Guides

It is a lovely sunny but chilly day and we are running tours today at 1000 and 1400!

Species seen today: Humpback Whales and Minke Whales

10:00 - It was again a beautiful calm, sunny but frosty morning. We were very lucky to have a pair of humpback whales (Mariupol and one other) close to shore, just 15mins sail. They were just chilling, travelling slowly and not really going anywhere or doing anything. We stayed with them a while before going on a search. Soon we heard from another whale watching boat about another whale they found about 2 miles away. Once we arrived we saw it was our beloved Neila the humpback. She was feeding and quite occupied but we enjoyed watching her. On the way home we took a little detour and went more south. We encountered more birds to the south and a minke whale that only surfaced once. We have been extremely lucky lately with the incredible weather.

14:00 - It was a little colder and the sea was lot more choppy than the morning tour. We still had good sightings of all three humpbacks. However, we first when out to Neila, she was still relative in the same place as the morning but taking longer dives, maybe 7-8 minutes but showing herself well when at the surface. Once all the other boats had left the other two humpbacks (Mariupol and the other unnamed) we headed over. It was difficult to find them at first but with patience we found them in the end. They were taking 8 minute dives and surfacing a few 100m from where they last went down. With each surface we got a better understanding of their speed, timing and direction so eventually we had them surfacing quite close to out boat. A nice end to the day.
