The Arctic Tern (Sterna paradisaea) is a graceful seabird renowned for its slender body, long tail streamers, and striking black cap. During the summer months, these incredible migratory birds are a common sight on our tours in Reykjavík, darting elegantly above Faxaflói Bay. Arctic Terns hold the record for the longest migration of any bird, traveling between their Arctic breeding grounds and Antarctic wintering areas each year. They feed primarily on small fish and marine invertebrates, which they catch with precision during agile dives. The abundance of Arctic Terns in the bay during summer underscores the area's importance as a breeding and feeding habitat, offering a unique opportunity to witness one of nature’s most remarkable travelers.
